Fairtex BGV1 Universal boxing gloves in 10oz, 12oz and 14oz

What Size Boxing Gloves Do You Need? 10oz, 12oz or 14oz

The most common question we get in the shop is which glove weight to buy. Here is the short version.

What oz actually means

The oz number is the weight of the glove, which in practice means how much padding is in it. It is not the size of your hand. A 14oz glove is not wider than a 10oz glove, it just has more foam over the knuckles.

More padding protects two things: your hands, and the person you are hitting.

Which weight for what

  • 10oz. Bag work and pad rounds. Lighter, faster, and you feel the shot land. Not for sparring.
  • 12oz. The all-rounder. If you train a few times a week and do a mix of bags, pads and light technical sparring, this is the pair to own.
  • 14oz. Sparring. More foam means less damage to your partner and less wear on your hands and wrists over time.

If you can only buy one pair and you are an average adult doing general training, buy 12oz.

Body weight matters too

As a rough guide:

  • Under about 60kg: 10oz or 12oz
  • About 60kg to 75kg: 12oz or 14oz
  • About 75kg to 90kg: 14oz

We stock 10oz, 12oz and 14oz. If you are over about 90kg and sparring regularly you may want 16oz, so message us before you order rather than sizing down.

One more thing: ask your gym. Plenty of coaches in Lebanon will not let you spar in anything under 14oz or 16oz regardless of your weight. It is worth a message before you buy.

What we stock

  • Venum, from $24.99, in the Elite, Challenger and plain black lines. Skintex leather, the standard choice for most people training Muay Thai and boxing here.
  • Everlast Prime leather, $34.99, in black or green.
  • Fairtex BGV1 Universal, $35. A Thai brand with a tighter fit through the hand, popular with people who have trained in Thailand.

All three come in 10oz, 12oz and 14oz.

Hand wraps are not optional

Gloves protect your knuckles. Hand wraps protect your wrists and the small bones across the back of your hand, and they soak up sweat so your gloves last longer. Buy wraps at the same time as gloves, not later.

Making them last

  • Take them out of your bag after training and let them air dry.
  • Do not leave them in a car. Heat and damp together are what kill the lining.
  • Wipe the inside with a cloth now and then. Replace them when the padding over the knuckles stops springing back.
